Vacation Tips
Vacationing Stress Free
Are you preparing for a vacation? If so, here is a simple set of travel tips to help make your vacation smoother — from packing and documents to room preferences, excursions, and airport transfers. These reminders can save time, money, and stress.
𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: Most travel companies now deliver documents electronically. Expedia, for example, delivers travel documents almost entirely electronically. The company’s process is built around giving travelers immediate access to confirmations plus guidance on what additional documents they may need depending on the destination.

𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Again, using Expedia as an example, the process is:
1. Open the booking in 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘀
2. Selecting 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗳𝘆
3. If the system does not allow the change online, it will direct the traveler to 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁.
4. At that point, Expedia provides the specific phone number for that itinerary.
This process ensures the agent has access to the package details and can modify them correctly.
𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝘆-𝗢𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲: The TSA’s liquids rule—known as the 3 1 1 rule—allows travelers to bring liquids, lotions, gels, creams, pastes, and drinks in their carry-on bags only if each container is 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, and all such items must fit into one quart-sized clear bag per passenger. This rule applies broadly to anything that can spill, pour, pump, squeeze, spread, or smear, which includes toiletries like lotions and cosmetics as well as beverages. Larger quantities must go in checked baggage unless they qualify for specific exemptions such as medications, infant nourishment, or certain duty-free liquids.
𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲: Major U.S. airlines (economy class) typically charge
• First checked bag: $35–$40
• Second checked bag: $45–$60
These ranges reflect industry-wide pricing as of late 2025–2026. However, due to rising fuel costs, United Airlines and JetBlue have raised fees. For United, see https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/baggage.html. For Frontier, see https://www.jetblue.com/at-the…/baggage-information….
To avoid paying an extra fee for exceeding the 50-pound weight limit on your checked bag, you should weigh your bags before you leave home and again before you leave the resort. Please do not weigh your bags on a bathroom scale! Instead, you should use a 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 luggage scale, which you can clip to the suitcase handle. For an example, see https://www.walmart.com/…/Protege-Manual…/304920733.
𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲: When traveling to Mexico or the Caribbean, do 𝗻𝗼𝘁 exchange US dollars for the local currency. If you exchange currency, you will lose money, because all local vendors prefer US dollars to their own currency. When you use a credit card to pay for excursions, etc., your credit card company will provide the best exchange rate available.
𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀:If you are planning to use credit cards to pay for excursions, souvenirs, etc, be sure to inform the credit card companies before you leave home. If you are planning to use a debit card, be sure to inform your bank. Otherwise, the charges — being made in a foreign country in this era of identity theft — may be declined.
𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲: Contact your cell phone provider to verify that your cell phone will work outside of the United States. A temporary change in your cell phone plan may be needed.
𝗗𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Be sure to bring small bills — $1s and $5s — for tipping, mostly at the airport. Upon departure from the resort, tipping is optional. Do not bring $50 or $100 bills, because $50 and $100 bills are suspected of being counterfeit.
𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗻:Bring goggles, sandals, and water shoes. Pack sunscreen, insect repellent, and Benadryl spray in your checked bag. Reef-safe sunscreen is required or recommended in many destinations. A wide-brimmed hat or UPF clothing helps reduce sun exposure.
𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Just say 𝗡𝗼!!!! When you arrive, there are two points where you could fall into the time-share ripoff trap. After going through Customs and Immigration, exit the arrival hall, bypassing all representatives inside trying to get your attention by claiming to be your transportation provider. The second attempt could occur after check-in. If you are told that the presentation will take only 90 minutes, don’t believe it! The presentation will take at least half a day, reducing your beach time.
𝗥𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀: Resort rooms are usually described as something like “One king bed or two double beds.” Because room assignments are done at check-in based on availability, you should arrive as early as possible. Before accepting the keys, you should ask, “How many beds are in this room?”
𝗘𝘅𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: If you are staying at a resort, you should check meal times and book dinner reservations before arranging excursions.
Although it is not possible to anticipate every situation, following these guidelines will help make your vacation stress-free.
